DOMINICANS IN NEW YORK: CUNY'S NEW ARCHIVES AND LIBRARY INAUGURATED

On December 10, 2008, the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute celebrated the completion of its newly expanded and redesigned Archives and Library, located in Room 2/202 of CCNY’s North Academic Center.

With an attendance of more than a hundred university and public officials, scholars, community representatives and special guests from the Dominican Republic, the ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at 11 a.m. Sarah Aponte, the Institute's head librarian, gave the welcoming remarks, followed by the president of the City College of New York, Gregory H. Williams, City Council Members Miguel Martínez and Diana Reyna, and the Director of the IDS, Ramona Hernández, among others.

The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute was established in 1992 with the mission of gathering, producing and disseminating knowledge on the experience of people who trace their ancestry to the Dominican Republic; addressing the current lack of useful and reliable information concerning Dominicans in the U.S. and advancing research and teaching at the City University of New York focusing on the Dominican people.

More information is available in the event's press release.
