Conferences & Lectures

October 20 (6:30 pm - 9:00 pm) Behind the Name Series: William Walker and his “American Empire” in Nicaragua, 1855-1857, by Michel Gobat. Professor Gobat (University of Iowa) takes us back to a quite extraordinary episode in US-Latin American relations that it is both singular in its sheer idiosyncrasy and yet unnervingly familiar as a precedent for similar expansionist enterprises in the 20th century. Organized by the Fall 2009 Andrés Bello Chair in Latin American Cultures and Civilizations, Professor James Dunkerley (Queen Mary University of London, Department of Politics, Graduate School for the Humanities and Social Sciences). Reception to follow. At the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, 53 Washington Square South. For more information, click here or call 212-998-3650.

October 22 (4 pm - 7 pm) and October 23 (9 am - 6 pm)  After Truth Justice, Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, and Related Aftermaths. Two-day symposium on the status of the truth sought and produced through these processes. Sponsored by Columbia University's Institute of Latin American Studies and New York University's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Hemispheric Institute, and King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center. At the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, 53 Washington Square South. For more information, click here or call 212-998-3650.
