August 23, 30 (7:00 pm) Jay Alvarez at Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Jay Alvarez presents his show Be Careful! The Sharks Will Eat You, based on his experience traveling from Cuba to Miami in 1964, fleeing the Cuban Revolution. Tickets are $15. August 25 (8:00 - 9:30 pm) Flash in the Panic! Charlie Vázquez presents an experimental reading with poets, writers, and other text-shapers; performers will be asked to write on one only side of a piece of paper. Featuring Tomás Rafael Montalvo, Jennifer Ortiz, Gabrielle Rivera, Meriam Rodríguez, Roberto Santiago, Garett Ford, Tod Crouch, and John Williams. At Nowhere Bar, 322 East 14th Street. August 28 (6:00 - 9:00 pm) Hacia Afuera Downtown Festival. Art for Change presents a celebration of art, music, and food! Featuring DJ BlackTyAffair, La Bruja, and Los Chamanes. Cover is $20. $15 in advance for students, East Harlem residents, and Hacia Afuera volunteers. At the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, 236 East 3rd Street, Between Avenue B & C.
