May 12 – May 15 (8:00 pm) Carmen Loisaida. This play, written by and starring Eva Vásquez, is a modern adaptation of the classic opera Carmen, set on the Lower East Side and replacing the arias with Latin dance numbers. May 12 - June 5 (8:00 pm and other schedules; see below) The Light of a Cigarette: A Story of Dominican-York. A play by Marco Antonio Rodriguez about a Dominican mother and her semi-closeted gay son. May 12 - June 12  (8:00 pm and other schedules; see below) Growing Up Gonzáles: Love, Lies, and My First Hooker. Written, produced, and directed by Felix Rojas, this one-man show stars Herbie Quiñones as Cisco Gonzáles, a forty-something Puerto Rican with a seriously confused identity. May 12 - June 19 (various schedules; see below) No Problemo, Amigo. Thalia Theater presents the world premiere of Jaime Espinal's prize-winning comedy about immigration. Directed by Angel Gil Orrios. May 13 (6:00 pm) La Gallina Submarina (The Underwater Hen). Written and directed by Maria Bollain, this play tells the story of a chicken who wanted to learn how to swim. May 12 - Ongoing (8:00 pm and other schedules; see below) Ghetto Klown. John Leguizamo presents his newest one-man show, which tells his story from a childhood in Queens to his earliest days onstage in the avant-garde theater of 1980s New York. May 12 - Ongoing (8:00 pm and other schedules; see below) La Barbería. New World Stages presents this musical comedy about Benny Acevedo, a Washington Heights landlord and barbershop owner who must decide whether to sell his building or remain in the neighborhood he loves after receiving a multimillion-dollar offer for the building. May 12 - Ongoing (8:00 pm and other schedules; see below) En el tiempo de las mariposas/ In The Time of the Butterflies. A play by Caridad Svitch, based on the novel by Julia Alvarez. The story of the Mirabal sisters, murdered in 1960 by  thugs on the payroll of dictator Rafael Trujillo, a crime that prompted the fall of the Trujillo regime and left a deep mark in Dominican history. Jorge Armado's magical realistic play, directed by Jorge Ali Triana, tells the story of Doña who, missing her late husband, remarries and attempts to live with both -- the living and the dead. Serrano and directed by José Zayas, tells the story of two brothers, a professional Puerto Rican baseball player who must choose between fame and his personal convictions, and a member of the U.S. Marines. May 14 (7:00 pm) Cambio/Exchange: Una Experiencia Visual Comunitaria - A Visual Community Experience. Students from Brooklyn College's PIMA (Performance and Interactive Visual Arts) Program present an evening telling the stories of immigrants and the challenges they face, including live music, video, puppet theater, and traditional foods. May 15 (6:30 pm) No Eres Tú ¡Soy Yo! (It's Not You, It's Me). Luis Fernández's standup comedy show is the most popular one in Venezuela, and now he's bringing his witty observations on love and women to Repertorio Español, 138 East 27th Street. May 17 (8:00 pm) Playing for Keeps and Foolish Pride: A Family Tragedy. The Jerry A. Rodriguez Reading Series at Teatro LATEA presents two plays by Kristoffer Infante. In Playing for Keeps, a young couple takes in a stranger who begins to erode their happy life together; and in Foolish Pride, a sparring father and son are forced to reexamine their relationship in the face of family tragedy.
