Latino Literature/ Nuyoricans and Other New Yorkers

In 1967, New York’s literary world was stormed by Down These Mean Streets,a memoir that depicted the life of inner-city young men trapped in a vicious cycle of racism, violence, drugs and incarceration. Its author, John Peter “Piri” Thomas (1928-2011)  –born in Harlem to a Puerto Rican mother and a Cuban father—spent time in prison for armed robbery before becoming a writer.
